Should you use Ubuntu Linux instead of Windows ?

by Siddhu on April 2, 2010

Bill Gates

One thing I’ve noticed throughout my life till now is the fact that Microsoft is the most popular and most successful company yet. And why not, it released Windows which was a really good Operating System (OS) at that time. At that point in time, UNIX was the successfully running OS, but Windows changed it. Life without walls, being the motto of Windows, had succeeded in taking over UNIX and becoming the default OS of most of the computers of that day.

Now, Windows is considered God. Apple Mac OS for example is much better than Windows, cost being slightly more, but still hardly few users use it. What could be the reason for this ? Windows may be good but that’s no reason for it to be used by over 80% of the users worldwide !! There are some things that make Windows more popular than how it should be. The problem starts with us. We’re not ready to accept new things. We don’t want to screw up our computer, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give the latest technology a spin.

Windows Logo

Here are some reasons Windows is used:

  • Bill Gates is the richest man
  • Everyone uses Windows
  • Windows came inbuilt with my PC
  • Windows has many tutorials
  • Everyone knows how to use Windows
  • Games come for Windows
  • My text book tells me how to use Windows
  • More software available
  • My computer man knows only how to install Windows

But have you ever thought whether there is a better OS than Windows. Windows 7 now costs 200$ for one PC license. The cost is quite considerable. And what about Windows Vista ? Why was it so slow ? Graphics was the cause. Windows is now known for its GUI (Graphic Use Interface) but you should know that this same graphics slows it down.

Introducing Linux, a free, open souce, unix-type operating system.

Linux - Future Technology

Linux is an operating system that was initially created as a hobby by a young student, Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Now its used by hundreds of companies worldwide.

Here are some reasons you should think about using linux:

  • Its free
  • Its open source – you can modify it
  • Its unix like – less graphics means faster performance
  • Since its free its developed by several companies. If you don’t like one then choose the other

Windows vs Linux

Microsoft Windows had replaced UNIX. It is possible that Linux can replace Windows.

In a world without fences and walls, who needs Gates (Bill Gates) and Windows ?

In future, I would love to see people stick to free things. Though you may say that commercial software does have better guarantee as compared to free ones, that can change. The choice of whether we should pay for an operating system in future, depends on the operating system you use now. The more you use Windows, the more profit you make for them, the more they will charge for their next OS.

Why pay for buying Windows when you can get a free operating system.

If you’re the average home user, and a person who is not too much into graphics, then Ubuntu Linux is the right OS for you.

Ubuntu is a free open soure OS based on linux. Its made by people just like us. For the people, by the people, to the people. Its often referred to as the human version of Linux.

Check out the ubuntu promise:

  • Ubuntu will always be free of charge
  • It will be updated every 6 months
  • It comes with full support from Canonical and other companies
  • It will be available in all possible languages
  • All core applications are all free and open source
  • It is free for you to modify
  • It comes pre-built with the necessary open source software an OS needs
  • It is build by people around the world and software is added on popular choice

What can be better than an OS than the one made by people like us who know our needs ?

As Bill Gates said, “I wish I wasn’t the richest man in the world.”

Lets make Bill Gates dream come true. Lets start using other OS :P

Windows has more software because more people use it. If you start using Linux then people will probably build their apps on linux. Its not that linux apps cannot be built. I’ve played a few high graphics games on linux myself, but very few good games are there for linux, the reason being that people use Windows instead of linux. Its pointless building apps for linux if hardly anyone uses it. We can change that.

What do you think about using free and open source software. Should we really pay for an OS like Windows ? Give your views…

I too think Linux is pretty good but toppling off Windows from its position would not be possible for Linux. More so because the Linux project us fragmented into smaller and smaller different groups. If they (the developers) can all come together and develop a lethal distro of Linux then I am sure they can topple of Windows

Its true…

With all due respect to Linux and its fans, it can never take the place of Windows (despite of all its evilness)! Sad but true…
