How Piracy helps the Software Industry

by Siddhu on April 28, 2010

Software piracy is the illegal copying, distribution, or use of software.

Software piracy is one of the major crimes today, one thing is that it is rarely detected. Because of this, many people pirate software. But did you know this actually helps the software industry ?

1. People get to use the software free

Software Piracy lets users use the software free of cost. This way people can test software before using it. If they don’t like it then they can buy the software legally. Not all software have 30 day trials you know :P

2. It lets more people access knowledge

Imagine if Windows was never pirated. How many people could surf the web with Internet Explorer ? Before free operating systems was built, software piracy was the best and cheapest way to get knowledge by accessing the internet.

3. It brings more people into the W3 network

W3 (World Wide Web) network has more than 65% of the people using pirated software. If these people leave the internet then it would really not be worth accessing the internet.

4. It stops fans from buying crap

Of course many software come free as 30 day trials. But how long can you use a software without damaging it too much ? What if you realise that you bought a software that got corrupt after 2 months and you don’t know how to reinstall it :P

5. It makes the software popular

Its often the most popular software that have to be pirated. Do you really think anyone would want to pirate useless software ?

6. It lets fans know which software is really good

Fans could know how popular a software really is by checking out a warez site or something :P If the software has many illegal copies then probably the software is really good…

7. Creates devout software fans

Its mostly the people using pirated software who are devout fans of that software.

8. Retailers Lose

Retailers try to sell certain software to make profit. By illegal downloading which is free of charge, one need not be fooled by dishonest retailers.

9. It helps software developers who are actually good

People who use pirated software often give feedback on the bugs they face. This immensely helps software that are really good.

10. It stops physical piracy

Now that you can download a software, why steal it from a store ? This is much easier :P

11. It stops violence

Imagine if people were selling software illegally in stores then they may eventually get caught by the police. It may lead to violence. Since software are available on the net, no one gets hurt :P

I don’t like piracy, but you look into it from a very different end! Nice post bro. Well piracy is helpful for us, but not for the software creators. It harms their profits.
